10 cds you would want if stranded on an island

OK, I'm sure everyone has seen something like this before. I enjoyed talking music with some of you on another thread. Here are the "rules" for this one. Pretend you are stranded on an island by yourself, for the rest of your life. You just happen to have a boom box cd player with you and a lifetime supply of batteries (like on Gilligan's Island). Which 10 albums(cds) would you want to have with you? Let's try to do this without including any "Greatest Hits" compilations if possible. Or, we could do one list without compilations and one list with.

Here are my picks to get things started.

"Sentimental Hygiene" -Warren Zevon
"Rain Dogs" -Tom Waits
"The Blasters" -The Blasters
"Greendale" -Neil Young
"Let It Bleed" -The Rolling Stones
"Rum, Sodomy, And The Lash" -The Pogues
"New Sensations" -Lou Reed
"Blood On The Tracks" -Bob Dylan
"This Year's Model" -Elvis Costello
"Beyond The Sunset" -Hank Williams as Luke the Drifter
"We seem to never learn from our past mistakes. Today's neocons are as idealistically misled and aggressive in remaking the Middle East as the Wilsonian do-gooders. Even given the horrendous costs of the Iraq war and the unintended consequences that plague us today, the neocons are eager to expand their regime-change policy to Iran by force." -Ron Paul

no beatles? ridiculous.

the problem of course is in picking just one. abbey road, let it be, rubber soul, help? i'd just randomly pick one of those. (i know sgt pepper and revolver so well i don't need either)

after that:

frente - marvin, the album
nirvana - in utero
hendrix - axis / ladyland (flip coin)
talking heads - stop making sense, deluxe edition
pink floyd - dark side of the moon
doors - morrison hotel / la woman (flip coin)
alice in chains - dirt
smashing pumpkins - siamese dream

and of course a swinging sinatra 60's disc.

mentions go to thorogood live, the first pretenders and cars albums, the stones, who's next, etc...

ps. in radio we call this "desert island discs"

I actually had "Let It Be" on here and Lennon's "Plastic Ono Band" album, and changed my mind several times. It was difficult to leave "Who's Next" off. Some of my picks, along with being great albums, have more sentimental value to me, and that is why some of these made the final cut.

If I was to pick a Talking Heads album, I think I would pick "Little Creatures" or "Remain In Light".

Oh crap, I knew this would happen. I just thought of one that should have been on my list.

Geez, this is hard...

I'll have to agree with Sinatra on at least a couple: Alice in Chains, Dirt... and the Cars. I don't know which one, but I know I love the Cars.

But as for the rest, I might have to go in spurts.

Prince and the Revolution, Purple Rain
Beastie Boys, License to Ill
Counting Crows, August and Everything After
Tool, Undertow OR Aenima
The Cure, Show
Pearl Jam, Ten
Bush, Sixteen Stone
Gin Blossoms, New Miserable Experience

And I say I'll go in spurts, b/c tomorrow, I won't agree with those at all. :)

The Cure is another one I forgot.

Can I change the rules to 20 cds?

Just kidding.

i thought of the cure, but no album to me is worth it, short of mixed up, which violates the rules. (i assume live albums however dont).

gin blossoms / counting crows are albums i'd like to consign to a desert island, and then sink like atlantis. thats TOTAL chick bands.

bush i'm not crazy about either, but it doesn't offend me nearly as much.

now, purple rain was on my list for years and years, but i think its finally starting to show some dating... still great, but not timeless.

btw hum, u had zuma for young...

I changed my mind. More bang for the buck on Greendale. :)

No compilations, eh? No fair! :( Let's see.....

Signals by Rush

Dream Theater Live at the Marquee

The Great Radio Controversy by Tesla

Physical Graffiti by Led Zeppelin

Fair Warning by Van Halen

There & Back by Jeff Beck

The Grand Illusion by Styx

Leftoverture by Kansas

The Nylon Curtain by Billy Joel

Toto IV

Excuse me while I go sulk over the many, many titles I had to leave behind. :(

I like Rush also, but I think I would have to have a compilation for them. I would love to wake up to the sounds of "Xanadu".

Styx have some great tunes, but they are further down on my list.

I also would have to include Electric Light Orchestra, if compilations were acceptable. I love "Mr. Blue Sky". It would be perfect for my Island. :violin: :music-guitarred:

I like topics like this, getting top-10 lists from everyday folks. (Almost as much as I hate 'em when I have to sacrifice the likes of Tommy!)

Fittingly enough, I would be very likely to have one of Letterman's books of Top Ten Lists with me if stranded on the same island. 8)

Let's make this even more difficult, and say you are limited to just 10 songs.

It's tough, and if I were to respond tomorrow, the list would not be the same.

Chavez Ravine, Ry Cooder
Blonde on Blonde, Bob Dylan
Hot Rats, Frank Zappa
Clear Spot, Captain Beefheart
Hymns to the Silence, Van Morrison
SpyBoy, Emmylou Harris
Music From Big Pink, The Band
Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, Lucinda Williams
Plastic Ono Band, John Lennon
Live From Austin, Delbert McClinton
