Anyway, I don't know if either of you will know anything about this, but I have a question about the child porn.

Not too long ago, when asked, I said it was rare, that there weren't actual pics just links, but that's changed a little in the last couple weeks. There are pics, and it's not really rare. I've pretty much been deleting more than one a day for at least 10 days if I had to guess...

(And this is not about character recognition before posting--I don't care about the discomfort of seeing it, I care about the fact that it exists.)

So the question: Is there some sort of agency we can be forwarding those IPs to?

B/c I wouldn't say anything (probably) if it was young-looking 15-yr-olds or something like that, but it's definitely not. A lot of those pictures are of girls that can't be more than 8 or 10.

And I don't know anything about the laws surrounding stuff like this, so I was just wondering if there are any relevant laws, and if so, who's enforcing them, can we help in any way?

Cuz I'm a rat and I'd love to rat on these people. If I see one more little girl posed provocatively with her shirt off, I think I might throw up.

And also, one last tidbit, does it matter if the people are foreign? B/c one I see quite a bit seems to be Russian, based on things written on the page.

Anyway, just wondering. B/c I know it's wrong and I know they're doing it so I'd really like to tell someone. Thoughts?

if you actually try the links they post, they don't go anywhere!

so what are they doing and why? none of their links work.

the problem with IPs is they are never the same and they can be faked.

I tell you, I'd love to get paid per message I delete. I think I could be looking at a very early retirement.

Once I found the "moderator's control panel" button, things got a bit easier. Before that I was having to open each and every message individually that I wanted to delete. I'm not kidding when I say that my trips to the forum were 75% deleting messages and 25% posting.

I do wonder though how a bot manages to register for forum use. Usually when I join a discussion group, I apply and receive a link via email that I must click on and often re-enter some bit of information from my application before I am granted forum access. I suppose that a bot program can be written to do this but I admit to being more than a bit surprised.

No problem on the delayed response. My write-back time has suffered considerably since I got a jobby-job. Have I talked about my job here? Yeah, I'm working for-real for the first time in years, and it's awesome.

Anyway, I just had to look for what you were talking about, and yes, I can see how that would be easier. I've been opening each and every message the whole time I've been doing this. The whole time.

I just asked Sinatra the other day in a thread if there was a way we could just select threads all at once and perform one action, like in e-mail, but he didn't answer, and now I see that there is. I knew it was a good idea.

I just never clicked on that b/c I knew how to delete, and that's all I'm supposed to do, so I figured that was where you go to do things I don't need to do.

And I know exactly what you mean about deleting/posting. That's part of why I don't post as much anymore. I delete first, then I look around, but I don't say anything unless I really want to.

And I don't understand the bots, either. Who creates them? And do they actually make money at it? It has to be profitable, or they'd stop, right?

hi, sorry for my absense. just got back from a colorado ski trip.

weapons, i didn't even know that existed! excellent work!

i am trying to figure out ways to fix this, but it'll probably be on hold for a while. 3.0 should fix it, but i have server issues for that, and i haven't found an easy 2.0 solution yet.

What worries me is that the bots are getting better.

over the last couple of days, I've seen posts with titles that actually don;t self-identify them as 'prOn'. I've had to open the topic to see what the post is really about to decide whether or not to delete it. Sorta reminds me of retail and shoplifters...shoplifters get smarter, anti-shoplifting steps get smarter, shoplifters get smarter, and the circle goes on.

Tiffany- no I didn't know about your job. Congratz!

Mr. S- skiing starts out with two strikes against it in my book: it's cold and the idea of mixing trees and speed has too great a chance for a bad ending. Still and all, the scenery must be real nice. And any excuse for a Hot Toddy is a good one.

its a known issue. it might not be fixed for a while. but it will be fixed. you might want to take a break for a couple of weeks, and check back.

here's the plan...

the new spambot beater is working better than we anticipated, so it appears to me that any spam on the site as of now, is coming from OLD already registered spambots.

SO... the plan is to have any spammers screen names listed here BEFORE you delete the spam. in other words, if u see spam/porn on the site, just copy and paste the posters screen name in this thread (or start a new one if you like) before you delete the post, and we will then deactivate them as we go.
