Can Fred Thompson Perpetuate the Reagan Legacy?

Bernie,

Your book was fantastic. You gave my fellow Republicans the chastising they deserve for abandoning the conservative principles of Ronald Reagan.

Can Fred Thompson assume the mantle of President Reagan? Whereas, filling the Gipper's shoes is virtually impossible, can Fred Thompson reinvigorate the conservative movement within the Republican Party by 2008? We face a real crisis in the event the Democrats gain the White House, particularly with regard to the economy. Mitt and Rudy are certainly decent alternatives to any candidate the Democrats put forth, but Fred seems to be the best Republican candidate capable of re-instituting true conservatism.

Any thoughts?

I know that you addressed this post to Bernie but I too have been looking to Fred Thompson to reconstitute Conservatism. Like yourself, I think Rudy and Mitt are way above any of the Democratic candidates. Unfortunately the definition of Conservatism has to be redifined some to fit their views. Not so with Fred Thompson. Fred is the best hope for all Conservatives.

rudy has said he would appoint judges like roberts and scalia who go by what the constitution says, not what they want it to say.

i don't think conservatives have anything to fear from a rudy gov't.

Thanks, Cortese. I could not agree more.

Mr. Sinatra, while I differ somewhat from Rudy with respect to several issues, I think his fiscal conservatism is wholly commendable. As I recall, Steve Forbes is the financial consultant for economic affairs for Rudy's campaign.

i was a big flat tax guy, until the fair tax idea came around.

I don't think Fred Thompson could win. He and his son have worked as lobbyist for the Washington Est. With the anti-Washington bias accross the nation, he would be fighting an uphill battle. Also, remmember no washington insider Has been elected since Nixon. All the presidents elected since then have been Govenors. So, it will be Rudy or Rommey.
Newt might have a chance, but could be viewed as an insider.

I'm totally for Fred...although if Rudy gets it, I'll vote for him too. I cannot wait for Fred to do some campaigning around here...I'm SO there!!

Ciao TA. It seems you've jumped on the Fred bandwagon too! I like him a lot and do hope that he gets the GOP nomination with Huckabee or Hunter as the VP.

No, Scott, that's Italian. Today's lesson was supposed to be in Tagalog. (Why in heck do you understand Italian anyway?! Everyone knows the surname Cortese is of Chinese/Apache descent.)
My staff linguist is off, so I'm handling today's aforementioned Tagalog phrase: "Tengo un avestruz en mis pantalones." By coincidence it also translates in Spanish as "I have an ostrich in my pants."
Tomorrow's lesson will be the Hindu version of "Honey, I swear she is only a friend, now please put down the reciprocating saw."

LOL Jeff, Chinese/Apache! I can't do anything right can I? :lol:

I've been studying Italian for over a year now. I have a foreign language requirement for my degree and since I'm 1/2 Italian (they don't offer classes in Celtic to satisfy my Irish heritage, heh), I decided to take Italian. The classes are difficult but the professors (who are very pretty women from Italy BTW :wink:

) make learning Italian fun. It's amazing at how much I've learned so far. I would consider getting a minor in Italian but I'm sick of dicking around with my undergrad and want to start work on my masters as soon as I can.

I almost understood the sentence you wrote in Spanish because the two languages are similiar in some cases. I'm horrible at Spanish though and butcher it whenever I attempt to speak it with my girlfriend. Fortunately for her my Spanish is worse than my Italian. :lol:

I like Thompson, and if he were to get the Republican nomination, I'd get behind him 100%.

But I think my primary vote is going to Rudy. The guy is an absolute pit bull on the campaign trail. And to this point, he's been the only Republican candidate who's shown the nerve to go after Hillary directly and attack her on ISSUES. I like that. I like that a LOT.

To me, Rudy is a classic "Goldwater conservative"-----strong national defense, smaller gov't, lower taxes, physcal responsibility & capitalism. The fact that he happens to be pro-choice is also a parallel to Barry Goldwater.......and to this day, he is STILL seen as a politically conservative icon.

Anybody who is pro-life that would "boycott" Giuliani if he gets the nomination because of this issue is just shooting themself in the foot. They'd be giving half a vote by "default" to Hillary-----who is not only RADICALLY pro-abortion, she's also pro-partial birth abortion (which Rudy is not) and against parental notification (which Rudy is not).

And then there's the one & ONLY way a president would have any effect whatsoever on the issue-----Supreme Court judges.

Rudy is a constitutionalist. He's made it clear he will nominate strict constructionist judges like Roberts, Alito, Scalia & Thomas (in fact, he's also a good friend of Antonin Scalia).

Hillary is a radical socialist. She will nominate as many Ruth Ginsbergs (or WORSE) as she possibly can.

This shouldn't even be a debate.
