I don't think that anyone is trying to say that this true hero's actions justify the war.

I think the point is that, in past conflicts, the media has made at least SOME effort to inform the public as to the positive steps our armed forces take and the heroism which is a matter of course to the best of us (those in the military).

Why not now?

Local medias cover the acts of heroism regularly, when I used to watch local news back in MI they would regularly comment on the exploits of local military boys. The national media's job isn't cheerleader for the armed services, it's to provide an accurate picture for the American people. The fact that a marine sacraficed himself to save his friends is admirable but it doesn't change anyhting about this war and does not warrant massive coverage by the national media.

Why not steve? That man exhibited extreme courage, patriotism, and the willingness to sacrifice himself for his "brothers" or "family" if you want to call them that. You have to meet a SEAL and see what they go through in training just to understand how close each group of trainees get and just how well they do their job.

I have a friend from high school who is a SEAL and my cousin just got back from a tour in Iraq with the marines. I understand that they become as close as any family but that has nothing to do with anything. Yes, this man was a hero, but that doesn't mean people like ballsy should use his heroism to try and justify their own jingoist ideas. This man was a human who was willing to dive to his own death to save other humans that he cared about, he's not some tid bit to help you win an argument about the direction of the war.
