Is law school necessary??

Unread postby beaburt » Sat May 20, 2006 2:31 pm

I have completed my first year of law school, so I took Torts, Constitutional law, criminal law, contracts etc. The cost of my first year in law school was $37,000....essentially all law school students are doing is taking "legal philosophy" classes until they sit for the 2 day BAR exam which gives them the legal License to practice law in the court system.

The BAR exam is the only measure of ones ability to practice law, it seems to me that law students in general are being scammed into paying $100,000 for an education that in most cases doesn't even prepare you to pass the BAR exam. Abraham Lincoln didn't have any formal education....he was self-taught and passed the BAR and practiced law!

My contention is that one can learn the law through self-study, then sit for the bar and save a heck of alot of money. We keep on hearing that we are a nation of laws, but at the same time average citizens are not allowed to practice law without jumping through the socialist hoop of college and law school which is a HUGE cost. If one can demonstrate that he or she is proficient in the knowledge of the law, shouldn't that person be allowed to take the BAR exam and practice law without dropping $100k on law school???

It is not necessary for anyone other than Beaburt to pay attention to this.

What I get from your post as usual is that you come from 'money.' Probably what we refer to as 'Neuvo Riche.' Just so happens I live on a barrier island off the southern east coast. We summer in Southhampton which equates with Greenich. My family is 6th generation New York Social Register Lace Curtain Irish from 'Old Money."
You can impress me only with your mouth, not your money.

LOL.....I am old money as well, half the family owned very large tobacco interests in Louisville, Kentucky.....the other half of the family was the largest private hotel chain in 1936 with over 53 hotels nationwide, 18 in NYC alone. As far as south hampton goes the NYC faction of the family has been summering their since 1940, and yes I have played tennis many times at the Meadow Club!!!!

Thanks for the spelling lesson. Does anyone really care except the spelling cow? I thought I read on a post here where you claimed to be half Jewish. Strange mix for a White Anglo Saxon Protestant. At any rate, name calling will get you no place with me. While I do agree with some of your ideas, I don't put much credence in your other claims. Anyway, my family isn't in Who's Who are you?

Wait! Didn't Carly Simon write a song about you?

My father is half Jewish on his mothers side, she converted to Christianity for my grandfather who was Presbyterian. I was responding to your name dropping in your post.....basically 1/2 of my fam dates back to 1720, the half Jewish side dates back to 1840......does the fact that my grandmother was a christian convert in your mind exclude me from the blueblood??? Have you even been to the Meadow Club in South Hampton, do you prefer the grass courts or the clay??? Personally I mentioned the cost of law school to make a point about how Law school is a scam, when people should be able to practice law without it!!

Didn't drop any names, merely making a point that you reiterate over and over. Is it possible that I am the only one here who misunderstands you. Actually in another life, I was raked over the coals for defending you. We have both made our points I suppose so no hoop jumping.

Oh just a footnote. I'm not much on tennis but the last time I attended a function at the Meadow Club, most all the courts appeared to be grass. I didn't notice any clay or hard courts, but that was a number of years ago. Blue-blood is hyphenated or two words, never one. Sorry for the spelling lesson.

Sure, you SHOULD have the option of proving your skills you learned on your own. But even if you passed, odds are no one would hire you, or want you as their lawyer/attorney because you didn't take time in college learning from top profressors, you just were able to pass somehow.

But, I will say one thing on all this rich talk. In history, money was generally earned by simple people who had no money, but made a right move and raked it in. THOSE people were generally fairly good hearted people, but if you look at their kids, and their kids, etc etc, most of them have become snobs with their money, bloated and evil.

I can't believe I'm even responding to this blue-blood crap. However, as a person who was brought up in Connecticut, dated Jane Fonda, spent much too much time in Greenwich, Darien, Westport, etc, etc, raced sail boats all over Long Island Sound and at Larchmont, worked on the floor of the NYSE, danced to the music of Lester Lanin and Peter Duchin on a weekly basis and am a good friend of his wife , the former Brooke Hayward, etc, etc, etc-------- all I can say is MONEY'S NOT EVERYTHING------------------- HEALTH IS 2 %

Welcome back B-wick....errr...I mean Clynt.

Not to rain on your parade, but I'm always skeptical of people announcing their departure. 99 times out of 100 they come back and then they kind of look silly when they do, especially after making a big to do about their departure.

Hey, regardless of what you think about her far-left, arguably treasonous political beliefs, there isn't much sense in arguing this point: Jane Fonda is still hot...especially for a woman 68-years old. No one can take that away from her. IMHO, she's definitely a GILF.

More power to you, Gil.
