The perception is that all gays are monolithically in favor of such things as gay marriage rather than civil unions and, on the GOP side of things, being against gay marriage is considered being pro-Family Values. Personally, I think that the term "family values" encompasses a great deal more than just opposing gay marriage and abortion, but too many on the Right think it ends there.
As for being Conservative - why not? There are log cabin Republicans. Aren't they conservative? Maybe - if you define it as being fiscally responsible.

My guess is that most Log Cabin Republicans are probably fiscally conservative and socially moderate. I find myself in that gray area when it comes to some issues myself.
