Nice try, Bernie, but I don't buy it. Although you make some good points about the President and Congress making "offers you can't refuse," you ignore the likelihood of civil disobedience and people not paying their taxes to say nothing of voting these idiots out of office. Let me provide an example. In the mid-1970s the Washington Public Power Supply System (WPPSS) was created. The governor, former governor, legislators, big money people were all behind the idea of constructing 5 nuclear power plants at once moving crews from one new installation to the next. Nobody anticipated the move toward energy conservation. One plant was built. Two were put in mothballs, The others were abandoned. WPPSS bondholders tried to sue the electric ratepayers (homeowners, businesses, etc) who were legally on the hook for the losses. Ratepayers said no way they were going to write checks to cover these losses, and if the government tried to tax them, they wouldn't pay. End of story...the bondholders took a bath getting back a mere 15 cents on the dollar. Moral of the story - the Constitution allows government to pass stupid laws. If people hate the law, they'll either not obey or throw the rascals out. Maybe Justice Roberts did everybody a favor by saying you better pay attention and perform your civic duty. Pundits like yourself help most by providing fact-based explanations of the likely consequences.
