Movie Trivia Time!

Unread postby Jeffreydan » Sat Nov 06, 2010 3:21 am

Contribute your own questions related to movies, movie stars, Oscars, etc. as you like after each batch is answered. Keep the number of Q's under 10, nothing too obscure, and feel free to point out others' mistakes (the answerers' and questioners' alike!) I'll give a couple of days or more as needed. Now the first batch:

1) Who was offered the title role in The Graduate before Dustin Hoffman, and why did he turn it down?

2) For which car company did Hoffman appear in TV ads before being cast in his breakthrough role?

3) Award-winning movies The Dark Knight and Network each feature something that no other movies in history can claim. What is it?

4) Two of Steve Martin's screenplays are based on classic works of literature. Name the movies and the original works.

5) What future sitcom star had a small role in Blackboard Jungle with Glenn Ford?

6) What glaringly wrong background noise did the creators of Airplane! intentionally put in the soundtrack throughout the movie?

7) Alfred Hitchc0ck made cameo appearances in several of his movies. In what unusual way did he appear in Lifeboat?

8) What personal possession does Sam Raimi like to feature in his movies?

9) What incident caused a 5-month delay in the filming of The Fortune Cookie?

10) What do Jack Nicholson's characters in The Shining and As Good as it Gets have in common?

Ok, I'll give it a whack:
1) Who was offered the title role in The Graduate before Dustin Hoffman, and why did he turn it down?
The guy who played “Robin” on the “Batman” TV series, couldn’t do it because he was already cast as Batman’s sidekick. I think Charles Grodin was cast but had a dispute about cash.

2) For which car company did Hoffman appear in TV ads before being cast in his breakthrough role?
Volkswagen

3) Award-winning movies The Dark Knight and Network each feature something that no other movies in history can claim. What is it?
Both had actors who died before receiving their oscar award

4) Two of Steve Martin's screenplays are based on classic works of literature. Name the movies and the original works.
Roxanne - Cyrano De Bergerac
Guess ???- Merchant of Venice

5) What future sitcom star had a small role in Blackboard Jungle with Glenn Ford?
Jamie Farr, O.K. I looked this one up

6) What glaringly wrong background noise did the creators of Airplane! intentionally put in the soundtrack throughout the movie?
The sound of a propeller plane when the film showed a Jet

7) Alfred Hitchc0ck made cameo appearances in several of his movies. In what unusual way did he appear in Lifeboat?
Before and after photos on a newspaper ad for a fictional weight loss pill, although the pictures were real as he really lost the weight in a crash diet. Admission, I looked this up also.

8)What personal possession does Sam Raimi like to feature in his movies?
He does Three Stooges References, maybe something along those lines?

9) What incident caused a 5-month delay in the filming of The Fortune Cookie?
Walter Matthau’s heart attack10)

What do Jack Nicholson's characters in The Shining and As Good as it Gets have in common?
Both writers.

Only one question, in the TV series’ “Combat” what character was called by his ACTUAL name during a scene?; extra credit if you can name the episode.

Nice work, BB, and thanks for being honest about looking up the answers. I didn't make a rule forbidding looking up answers, nor will I, but let's just say it doesn't carry the same weight.
Only ones you missed are #1, #4 (second of the two is incorrect), and #8.

Any other takers on the remaining 3?

Regarding Combat, I'm guessing Vic Morrow. (Never saw an episode.)

Dang, JD, I couldn't answer a nare one of those questions. Maybe I should have stated that when I say I like and somewhat know movie trivia, I meant things in movies. LOL Looks like I"m not worthy of such an endeavor. Let's see if I can come up with any questions myself:

Hmmmm

OK, it'll be simple, so name the movie the quote is from. This should be a little hard to look up so here goes.

1. It's only a flesh wound.

2. You're going to have to keep your wits about you.

3. Well isn't this a geographical oddity. Two weeks from everywhere.

4. What's the point of point of doing all those bloody push ups if you can't lift a bloody log.

5. It's me, it's me. Smarta$$ m----f----r

Ok, try these for now. I'm totally going off of memory here, so if I got my pwn quotes wrong, please forgive me. When I come up with more and better ones, I'll do another post.

1. Monty Python/Holy Grail
2. No Clue????
3. Oh Brother, where art thou
4. Batman Begins
5. It sounds like something Samuel L. Jackson would say, but my answer/guess would be the Team America movie (man, I hope I’m right on this one.)

My paper is ready to be graded, confident I passed with at least 3 of 5

4 out of 5 is correct. Number 2 was a stretch. It's one of my husband's favorite movie lines, but I think few would remember. It was from Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. and you were correct on #5. I'll see if I can come up with better ones tonight.

Last 3 unanswered q's from the 1st 10:

1) Robert Redford turned down The Graduate because he didn't think he could play a character of that level of naivete/

4) L.A. Story was based on Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream.

8) Raimi's dad's 1973 Oldsmobile sedan.

Now for some quotes:

1) "Here's a quarter. Why don't you go downtown and have a rat gnaw that thing off your face?"

2) "What are you yelling at me for? He's the one who ate your father."

3) "You're overcooking my grits, coach."

4) "This is no time for d***-measuring, Stuart!"

5) "No, no, no...don't shoot him. That'll only make him mad."

And yes, Rook, paraphrasing is close enough. (As if we all have the time to scan our videos!) :P

Now for more quotes:

1] "My client is a moron...that's not against the law."

2] "It's about time you two pencild**ks showed up. Where were you when that big bad stupid-looking pile of sewage breath made off with my white weddin' dress?!"

3] "Hey tenderfoot! Move your chicken wings, turkey!"

4] "Well, that's what wrenches are for, DUMB***!"

5] "I was going to work for the FBI, but they found out my parents were married."

6] "People ski topless here while smoking dope, so irony isn't exactly a top priority around here."

7] "If there's ever anything I can do for you, or more to the point, to you, just let me know."

From the Jeffreydan list (who's recently gone green)

1. A Few Good Men
2. Dragnet
3. National Lampoon's Vacation
4. No Clue, I'd like to use a lifeline
5. No Clue, I'll ask the audience
6. Roxanne
7. Fletch - guess???
8. I'll go along with Armeggeddon

A few of my own (mostly easy ones):

1. Don’t move El Guapo, or I’ll fill you so full of led you’ll be able to use your <Cheney> for a pencil.
2. All I asked is what was that gauge reading? AND YOU DON’T KNOW!
3. We’re out of towels and I’m too old to go divin’ into lockers.
4. Where’s your other hand … between two pillows … those aren’t PILLOWS!
5. He´s a phantom, an apparition. Second cousin to Harvey the Rabbit

Answers to my list:
BB bats better than .500 with #s 1, 2, 3, 6, and 8. Remaining are:

4] Law Abiding Citizen

5] Sneakers

6] Real Genius, but Fletch Lives had a great variation of that line.

My answers to BB's, at least the ones I know:
1. Three Amigos

3. Major League (Appreciative nod to the recently-departed James Gammon.)

4. Planes, Trains, & Automobiles

5. The Shawshank Redemption
