Core Values a la Obama
When asked recently in Lima, rather intelligently I thought, whether Obama would follow the tradition of not carping on his successor, Obama responded in essence, “Sure, as long as he doesn’t fuss with “core principles.”
The threshold question is, of course, whether he’s talking about the core principles of the Democrat Party or of the United States, a somewhat larger and more significant organization.
Under Obama’s leadership, the core principles of the Democrat Party would seem to be environmental myopia, domestic catering to potential voting blocs, a collectivist addiction to government-mandated resource redistribution, and international flaccidity. Upon his entry into office in 2008, Obama pledged a transformed United States, and he almost pulled it off.
But fortunately, the core principles of the United States reared up: freedom, personal and entrepreneurial, private property, free speech of all stripes, and vigorous preservation of peace against violence, local or international. With all his warts, Donald Trump managed to trample Clinton with his dedication to these U.S. core principles.
If these post-inaugural perspectives prevail, whatever observations Obama offers from his new home in Chicago will be viewed through a very much discredited lens, as they should.
