Hamilton—A Vice-Presidential Elect Review
“The excitement ended at the metal detectors”—Headline of the New York Times review of Corpus Christi, a play by Terrence McNally
“The excitement began at the curtain call”—Headline of Pence review of Hamilton
“The general languor of an evening with the creators of Broadway’s latest “hit” Hamilton” was thankfully relieved by a post-performance speech directed specifically to a prominent audience member.
Up to that point, the performance was tepid, bordering on tedious. Perhaps my judgment was tinctured by my having poor seats—they were facing the stage. And the lighting designer’s achievement was compromised by they’re being ON.
The theater’s seats were cramped. Only certain First Ladies would have been comfortably accommodated. Also the temperature in the auditorium was “deplorable.”
I was tempted to exit promptly, but I would not for the world have missed the evening’s coda, which provided the evening’s only excitement.
