Living with Losing
Sore losers:
Some take to their beds.
Others take to the streets.
Others take to the airwaves or social media.
So far, none has taken a powder as promised.
Adult losers:
Some are gracious.
Some promise productive cooperation.
The bedridden losers include those who can’t face the reality of classrooms or exams and are shamelessly excused from attendance by their faculty bedfellows and those who cut off communications with former friends who didn’t pay the price of friendship by losing themselves.
So far, the street takers have not been violent; their greatest sin is commercial retardation, which is a bore but an inevitable inconvenient consequence of a free-speech society. These protestors, of course, do their cause more harm than good, particularly when the protests are punctuated with signs and spoken slogans, which bring us back to the subject of retardation.
I’ll limit my observation of media reactions to a sampling of contributions from CNN and Fox News.
CNN (by the way, what is the Clinton News Network going to do without Clinton?), the ranks of which no longer include the disgraced Donna Brazile, is struggling on by basically regurgitating the distortions which characterized their coverage of the campaign itself. Among that network’s most outlandish sore losers are Van Jones and Charles Blow, both of whom wear their skin color like armor against reason.
On Fox News, Sean Hannity is on autopilot, repeating his campaign tirades against Obama with apparent unawareness that Obama and his “legacy” have now been lovingly deposited in the dustbin of history.
On the plus side, Bill O’Reilly’s analysis of the election results was erudite, incisive, and forward looking.
As previously stated, the Ark awaits eagerly the embarkation of the various Hollywood has-beens who have promised to leave the U.S. once Trump wins. Bon Voyage!
The Big Loser concession speeches were fascinating. Clinton’s was well-crafted and delivered with a degree of humility that only humiliation can produce. One unintentional note of comedy was struck by her offer to work with Trump in the future. I believe that Trump has made it clear that he is going to limit his wide search for co-workers to persons of integrity, ability, and philosophical wholesomeness. One of the most exhilarating consequences of Trump’s victory is the release from captivity of a treasure trove of talented statespersons, politicians, military leaders, media advisors and diplomats. The country has sorely missed your contributions and looks forward to your renaissance.
Obama’s speech was much more layered, folding in with the obligatory expressions of congratulation renewed and unabated expressions of egotism. For every mention of Trump there were twenty to Himself. Trump is not interested in grasping the torch of Obama’s relay race. He’s going to start his own after, of course, he clears the track of the debris that Obama has left on it.
Trump took a lot of abuse and ridicule for his third-debate statement that his acceptance of the final outcome of the election was conditional. Later, he mocked himself by stating that he would certainly accept the result, “If I win.” Without mockery of any kind, abused Bernie Sanders said that he’s prepared to work with Trump “if he’s serious.” Irony, anyone?
But the above illustrates a critical point in assessing reactions to losing. Whether expressed in bed, on the streets, on the airwaves, or on Jupiter with Cher, the sore losers are basically saying that they believe in the democratic form of government only if and when they win. This sense of entitlement to victory is perhaps, more than anything else, what turned the public against Hillary Clinton, who along with her surrogates, exuded it throughout the campaign. Donald never did.
